🔞 AI companion · Replika review
Replika: the best-known AI friend, romance with the brakes on.
The best-known AI companion app, built for friendship and emotional support rather than explicit chat. How it works, what Pro unlocks, and the best sites like Replika.

ViceHunt’s take: Warm, polished and easy to talk to, with a 3D avatar, voice calls and selfies. But romance sits behind a paywall, explicit roleplay is off the table for new accounts, and its privacy record includes a €5 million fine.

Replika vs the alternatives
The full Replika review

What is Replika?
Replika is an AI companion app made by Luka, Inc., the company founded by Eugenia Kuyda. It pitches itself as an AI friend you “do life with”, and its site claims more than 40 million users. It runs on iPhone and Android, with an older web app still available.
It’s not an NSFW app. In early 2023 Replika switched off erotic roleplay, and after a user backlash it let only accounts created before 1 February 2023 go back to the older, more permissive version. Anyone signing up now gets romance and flirting at most, with sexual content filtered out. The app is rated 18+ and the privacy policy says it’s for adults only.
How Replika works
You create one companion, your “Rep”, and shape its name, look and personality with a 3D avatar. Then you just talk: by text, or by voice call. Replika says your Rep remembers the people, routines and plans you mention, and it can send selfies, doodle on your photos and send back reimagined versions of pictures you share.
On the free plan your Rep is your friend. To set the relationship to romantic partner, you need Replika Pro. Conversations are kind and supportive, but long-time users often complain that personality and memory shift after big updates.
What Replika costs
The free version lets you chat with your Rep as a friend. Paid plans unlock the romantic partner setting and extra features, and the App Store lists monthly and yearly memberships plus a higher Platinum tier. Prices vary by country and platform, so check the app before you buy.
On top of that, Replika sells gems, an in-app currency mainly used for avatar outfits and items. Subscriptions renew automatically until you cancel them in your app store or account settings.
Privacy and reputation
Replika has more regulatory history than most. Italy’s data protection authority, the Garante, blocked the app in February 2023 over risks to minors, then fined Luka €5 million in 2025 for having no legal basis for processing data and no age verification. In January 2025, three advocacy groups also filed an FTC complaint accusing it of deceptive marketing; that’s an allegation, not a finding.
Its current privacy policy says your conversations aren’t shared with advertisers, and that only small, anonymised samples are used to train its own safety systems. But device, activity and hashed account data does go to Meta, Google and AppsFlyer, which may count as a “sale” under some US state laws, and you can opt out. You can delete your account in settings, and the policy says most data goes within 60 days.
Is Replika safe?
Replika is tamer than most, but it’s still an app that stores everything you tell it:
- Don’t share your full name, address or workplace
- Assume chats are stored and may be reviewed
- Turn off ad tracking in Your Privacy Choices
- Remember it’s an app, not a real relationship

ViceHunt’s verdict
Replika is a gentle, well-made companion for company, venting and a bit of romance. If that’s what you want, the free tier is a fair way to try it. If you came for adult roleplay, it isn’t here anymore for new accounts, and its privacy history deserves a long look.
Want deeper memory and fewer filters? Try Nomi AI or Kindroid. Want something more openly flirty? EVA AI leans further into romance.
Replika FAQ
Is Replika free?
Yes. You can chat with your Replika as a friend for free. Romantic partner mode and extra features need a paid plan, and gems for avatar items cost extra.
Does Replika allow NSFW chat?
Not for new users. Replika removed erotic roleplay in early 2023 and only restored it for accounts created before 1 February 2023. Newer accounts can have a romantic relationship on a paid plan, but sexual content is filtered.
Is Replika safe?
It’s adults-only and its policy says chats aren’t shared with advertisers, but it was fined €5 million by Italy’s privacy regulator in 2025. Don’t share real personal details, and opt out of ad tracking.
Can I delete my Replika data?
Yes. You can delete your account in the app’s settings, and the privacy policy says most account data is deleted within 60 days. Payment records are kept longer for legal reasons.
What are the best Replika alternatives?
Nomi AI for memory and fewer filters, Kindroid for deep customisation with selfies and calls, and EVA AI for a more flirtatious companion.
