Swipe apps, adult dating sites, personal ads and kink communities, for singles and couples, straight and queer. What each one is good for, what it costs and what to watch out for.
ViceHunt’s take: Pick by who you want to meet. The big apps have the most people; the niche ones have people who want what you want. Either way, never send money to a match.
Everyone’s on it. Not everyone wants the same thing.
Say what you want. Then it disappears.
Open-minded, inclusive and refreshingly upfront.

Tinder and Plenty of Fish have the most people, but they’re used for everything from flings to marriage, so expect mixed intentions.
Hookup-first apps and sites like Pure, Fling and Adult FriendFinder are upfront about sex. The crowd is smaller, but there’s less guessing. Feeld sits in between: open-minded, kink-friendly and welcoming to couples and ENM. Doublelist brings back Craigslist-style personal ads in the US.
Grindr is the biggest hookup app for gay, bi, trans and queer men, and Scruff is the friendlier alternative. BiCupid is built for bi singles and couples, Feeld has more than 20 gender and sexuality options, and Tinder lets you show any orientation.
Feeld lets you link your profile with up to five partners, and 3Fun is built for couples looking for a third. SwingLifestyle is the long-running home of the swinging scene, with clubs, events and travel.
For kink, ALT.com is BDSM personals from the same company as Adult FriendFinder, and FetLife is the biggest kink community online: a social network with groups and events rather than a dating app.
Most apps are free to join and charge for extras: Tinder’s Plus, Gold and Platinum, Feeld’s Majestic, Grindr’s XTRA and Unlimited, SCRUFF Pro. Pure needs a membership before you can chat, Fling and Ashley Madison use credits, and Adult FriendFinder and ALT.com keep messaging mostly for paid members.
Paid plans almost always renew automatically, trials included. Check how to cancel before you pay.
Hookup sites hold very personal data, and several have leaked it: Ashley Madison was hacked in 2015, Adult FriendFinder in 2016, and 3Fun exposed users’ locations in 2019. Grindr has been fined over sharing user data. Use a separate email address and a password you don’t reuse, and think twice about face photos.
Watch out for fake profiles too: BeNaughty says its own homepage uses AI-generated images. Never send money, gift cards or crypto to a match, keep chats in the app at first, and meet somewhere public. Our safety guidelines have more.
