What is 3Fun?
3Fun is a dating app for couples and singles interested in threesomes, open relationships and ethical non-monogamy. It’s run by 3Fun Limited, which lists an address in the Seychelles and says the app was founded in 2015.
Straight, gay, bi, pansexual and trans members are all welcome, as are couples of any mix. The company claims more than 10 million downloads and 3 million active members. Its website is now go3fun.co; the old 3fun.co address no longer loads.
How 3Fun works
It works like a swipe app: like or pass on suggested profiles, and when you both like each other it’s a match. You need at least one public or private photo to start, and you can get your photo verified.
Couples can share one account or link two separate ones, which makes it clear who’s talking. You can start group chats with your partner and matches, keep private photos for matches only, hide your profile, and block people from your phone’s contacts so you don’t see each other.
Free vs 3Fun VIP
Liking profiles and chatting with your matches are free, but free accounts are limited in how many people they can like.
VIP adds unlimited likes, a few “Pokes” a week to message people before you match, profile boosts, read receipts, searching other cities, Incognito mode and hiding your distance. Prices depend on your country and plan, and VIP renews automatically. Its App Store terms say you can’t cancel a period once it has started, and deleting your profile doesn’t cancel the subscription.
3Fun’s privacy record
In 2019 the security firm Pen Test Partners found that 3Fun was exposing users’ near-real-time locations, photos, birth dates and sexual preferences, even for people who had hidden their location. The app then claimed around 1.5 million users. 3Fun was alerted on 1 July 2019 and released a fix about a week later.
3Fun now runs a bug bounty and says it shows only approximate distances. Still, app reviews regularly complain about scammy profiles, and if you deactivate your account, your data is kept for six months before it’s deleted.
Is 3Fun safe?
3Fun has better privacy settings than it used to, but treat it with care:
- Use a private photo until you trust a match
- Video-call couples before meeting to check they’re real
- Never send money or verification codes to a match
