🔞 Kink social network · FetLife review
FetLife: the kink world’s home, not a dating app.
FetLife is the biggest social network for BDSM, fetish and kink, built around groups, events and writing rather than swipes. How it works, what’s free, why it isn’t a dating site, and the best sites like FetLife.

ViceHunt’s take: Unmatched for kink community, local events and learning, and almost entirely free. It’s not built for hookups, and members notice fast when you treat it like it is.

FetLife vs the alternatives
The full FetLife review

What is FetLife?
FetLife is a social network for people into BDSM, fetish and kink. It launched in 2008, is run by Canadian company BitLove and says it has more than 13 million members. Think of it as part forum, part social network and part events board.
It says plainly that it’s “not a dating site”. People do meet partners there, but it’s built around community: groups, discussions, writing and real-world events. If you’re after a quick hookup, that matters.
How FetLife works
You make a profile, pick your interests from a huge list of fetishes, then join groups, read and post, and RSVP to events. The homepage lists more than 24,000 upcoming events, from munches (casual social meetups) to classes and parties.
Search is deliberately limited, so you can’t just filter for nearby singles. You get to know people through groups, comments and events first. Optional profile verification adds a badge and lets you message more non-friends a day.
What’s free and what isn’t
Nearly everything. FetLife calls itself “99.9% free”: profiles, groups, events and messaging cost nothing.
Paying to support FetLife adds extras such as watching videos and a supporter badge. Support never renews automatically, so you’re only billed again if you choose to. There’s no official app in the App Store or Google Play; you install FetLife’s own web app from the site, and FetLife warns that store apps claiming to be FetLife aren’t theirs.
Is FetLife good for hookups?
Not directly, and that’s by design. Members tend to push back on people who skip the community part and message strangers asking to meet. Go to events, join local groups and talk like a person, and it’s one of the best places to meet kink partners you actually click with.
Its history has bumps: in 2017 it deleted hundreds of groups under pressure from its payment processor, and it has been criticised over how it handles accusations between members. If you want a site built for meeting up, ALT.com or Feeld are more direct.
Is FetLife safe?
FetLife is a community, but you’re still meeting strangers, so:
- Use a username and photos that don’t identify you
- Meet people at a public munch before anything private
- Ask people you trust about someone before meeting alone
- Only install the app from fetlife.com, never an app store

ViceHunt’s verdict
FetLife is the place to be if kink is part of who you are: huge, active, nearly free and full of real events. It isn’t a hookup site, and you’ll get much further treating it as a community than as a catalogue.
Want to meet up sooner? Try ALT.com for kink personals or Feeld for kink-friendly dating. Into swinging? Try SwingLifestyle.
FetLife FAQ
Is FetLife free?
Almost entirely. Profiles, groups, events and messaging are free. Supporting FetLife unlocks extras like videos, and it never renews automatically.
Is FetLife a dating site?
No, and it says so. It’s a social network for the kink community. Plenty of people meet partners there, but through groups and events rather than swiping.
Is FetLife safe?
It’s a long-running, legitimate community, but most members aren’t verified. Use a username that doesn’t identify you, meet at public munches first and be wary of anyone who rushes you.
Does FetLife have an app?
Not in the App Store or Google Play. FetLife has its own web app you install from fetlife.com, and it warns that store apps using its name aren’t official.
What are the best FetLife alternatives?
ALT.com for kink personals aimed at meeting up, Feeld for kink-friendly dating in an app, and SwingLifestyle if you’re into swinging.
