What is Janitor AI?
Janitor AI is a roleplay site where you chat with characters other users have built, or make your own. It launched in 2023, reached millions of users within months, and now says it has more than 15 million.
After OpenAI cut off its access in 2023, Janitor built its own model, JanitorLLM, which powers the free chats today. It’s for adults, and adult roleplay is allowed once you switch it on.
How Janitor AI works
Pick a character from the library, or write one with a personality, scenario and example dialogue, then chat. Everything is text: there’s no image generation and no voice.
Memory depends on context size. Free chats get about 9k tokens, so long stories start to forget early details. You can also plug in other AI models through an API key or proxy, but then your chats also go to that provider under its own terms.
Free vs Janitor+
Janitor AI is free, with unlimited chats on its standard models, and the company says a free option will always stay. Janitor+ is the paid upgrade, with roughly five times the memory, better models and faster replies.
Janitor+ renews until you cancel, through Stripe on the web or through the App Store or Google Play if you subscribed in the app. Subscriptions are generally non-refundable, and outside models you connect are paid for separately.
Is Janitor AI safe?
Janitor blocked UK users in 2025 rather than add age checks, and in 2026 it started asking people in the UK, Australia and Brazil for a one-time age check. It’s run by k-ID with a face estimate, an ID scan or AgeKey, and Janitor says it only receives a yes or no.
The official iOS and Android apps open in Safe Mode, and adult content can only be switched on from the website. Because anyone can publish a character, moderation is a constant issue: a 2025 Graphika study of five character platforms, Janitor AI among them, found thousands of harmful user-made bots across them.
