The full MangaGamer review

What is MangaGamer?

MangaGamer is a Japan-based publisher that launched in 2008. It was set up by Japanese studios including Overdrive, Tarte, Nexton and Circus to sell visual novels outside Japan in English.

Its catalogue includes well-known series such as Higurashi When They Cry, Umineko, Kara no ShĹŤjo and Rance, alongside many adult titles. The store has an 18+ toggle, so you can show or hide adult listings.

How MangaGamer works

You make an account, buy a game and download it. Most titles are for Windows, with a few for Mac or Linux, and there are physical editions, USB editions and merchandise as well.

Many of its games are also on Steam, but Steam versions often leave out adult content or need a patch. Buy from MangaGamer’s own store if you want the adult version without the extra step.

What MangaGamer costs

There’s no free-to-play side; you buy each game. Prices vary by title and the store runs regular sales.

MangaGamer also has MG Points, which work like store credit. Bigger, older series are often split into several parts, so check what a listing includes before you buy.

Reputation and payment history

MangaGamer is a legitimate publisher with a long track record. Its store has had payment trouble, though: in 2016 it paused checkout after fraudsters used stolen cards to buy Steam keys, and in 2019 it lost its payment processor for a while.

After the 2016 fraud it stopped selling Steam keys on its own store, so decide where you want the game before you buy. For a bigger indie catalogue, try itch.io.

Is MangaGamer safe?

MangaGamer is a safe place to buy, and a few habits help:

  • Buy adult versions from the official store
  • Get patches only from the publisher
  • Check the platform before you buy
  • Wait for sales on longer series

ViceHunt’s verdict

MangaGamer is a solid pick for story-driven visual novels in good English, with the adult versions sold straight from the publisher. It’s pay-only and mostly Windows, so it suits readers more than casual players.

For a bigger indie catalogue, try itch.io. For translated RPGs, try Kagura Games. For adult games on Steam, see Steam.
